March 17, 2019 Transfiguration

Second Sunday of Lent C - Transfiguration

Reading I:  Genesis 15:5-12, 17-18

Psalm:  Psalm 27

Reading II:  Philippians  3:17-4:1

Gospel:  Luke 9:28b-36

This comforting quote from one of my favorite poets reminds us of our Heavenly Father’s constant care for his children. Again, our Gospel reflection is on the Transfiguration. As a loving parent, God prepares his children for what they will face in the future. The faith of the disciples needs to be solid to be able to deal with the Passion of our Lord. A glimpse of the glorious Jesus can sustain them when there seems to
be no hope.

Luke is the only one of the evangelists who mentions the conversation taking place between Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. As they talk about the upcoming suffering and death of Jesus, they confirm the connections between their actions and predictions recorded in the Hebrew Scriptures.  The disciples are so impressed with the vision that they want to set up tents so that they can experience the wonder of it all longer.

Then, a shadow of a cloud is cast over them. From the cloud a direct command from God the Father is heard: “This is my chosen Son; listen to Him.” Having been able to see the glory of Jesus in his transfigured form and to be reassured of the coming fulfillment of the promise of a Savior and redemption, the disciples have been given the support needed as they face the upcoming experiences of the sufferings and death of Jesus.

As an only child, many people tend to think that I had everything I wanted when I wanted it. However, in my mother's wisdom, she knew she was to prepare me for my life to come. When  I would ask for something, sometimes I received it and other times the answer was “No.”  She knew that in the eventualities of life I would not always have my way. I have often felt grateful to her for the many ways she prepared me for life. Usually, something better would result in the long run even when I had to live with a “No.”  Our Heavenly Father knows what is best for us, so it behooves us to trust in His providence.

Though the Mountains May Fall  by Dan Schutte

Refrain:
Though the mountains my fall and the hills turn to dust,
Yet the love of the Lord will stand
As a Shelter for all who will call on His name.
Sing the praise and the glory of God!

Verse I:
Could the Lord ever leave you?
Could the Lord forget his love?
Though a mother forsake her child,
He will not abandon you.

Verse II:
Should you turn and forsake Him,
He will gently call your name.
Should you wander away from Him,
He will always take you back.

Verse III:
Go to him when you are weary;
He will give you eagles wings.
You will run, never tire,
for your God will be your strength.

Verse IV:
As He swore to your fathers,
when the flood destroyed the land;
He will never forsake you;
He will swear to you again.

 Reflection Question:  Can you think of a time in your life when something happened which disappointed you, but ended up being a blessing from the Lord?

Verso I:
¿Podría el Señor alguna vez dejarte?
¿Podría el Señor olvidar su amor?
Aunque una madre abandona a su hijo,
Él no te abandonará.

Verso II:
Si te conviertes y lo abandones,
Él suavemente llamará tu nombre.
Si te alejaras de él,
Él siempre te llevará de vuelta.

Verso III:
Ve a él cuando estés cansado;
Te dará alas de águila.
Correrás, nunca te cansarás,
Porque tu Dios será tu fortaleza.

Verso IV:
Como juró a tus padres,
cuando el diluvio destruyó la tierra;
Él nunca te abandonará;
Él te jurará de nuevo.

August 19,2018 - The Gift of Friendship

The Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time   Year B
Reading I:  Proverbs 9:1-6

Psalm:  34

Reading II:  Ephesians 5:15-20

Gospel:  John 6:51-58

One of the greatest blessings in life is to have a close and faithful friend. One can share one’s inmost thoughts and concerns with the person. In addition, through the ups and downs of life, this friend will be loyal and supportive. While we all have many acquaintances in life, we usually only have a few intimate human friends.

However, in today’s Gospel we are reminded that we all are offered that special friendship with  Jesus. Not only does He come so close that; He actually allows us to feed on him in Holy Communion, but He is also eternally present to us, here
and hereafter.

Jesus tells us: “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me
and I in Him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.”
When we become one with Jesus in Holy Communion, we are given the
grace to live a life of love as Jesus did.

However,  Jesus also is God. Therefore, He can be with us permanently. We don’t have to suffer the pain of saying “Good-bye” to Him.  Although we may not always feel His presence, we know He is with us. Just as we cannot see the air which surrounds us, we know it is there. Otherwise, we could not live. However, there are times when a cool breeze will comfort us or we see the power of God in a storm winds. So God can make his presence felt in a kind word spoken to us or a helping hand from a neighbor.

Finally, when our time on this earth is completed, we will see the Lord face to face. He has prepared a place for us in our eternal home with Him. How blessed we are!!

The following hymn was written by Joseph Scriven who experienced many tragedies in his life.  It was the support of his friend, Jesus, which helped him through them all.

  1. What a Friend We Have in Jesus

  1. What a friend we have in Jesus,
  1. All our sins and griefs to bear!
  1. What a privilege to carry
  1. Everything to God in prayer!
  1. Oh, what peace we often forfeit,
  1. Oh, what needless pain we bear,
  1. All because we do not carry
  1. Everything to God in prayer!
  1. Have we trials and temptations?
  1. Is there trouble anywhere?
  1. We should never be discouraged—
  1. Take it to the Lord in prayer.
  1. Can we find a friend so faithful,
  1. Who will all our sorrows share?
  1. Jesus knows our every weakness;
  1. Take it to the Lord in prayer.
  1. Are we weak and heavy-laden,
  1. Cumbered with a load of care?
  1. Precious Savior, still our refuge—
  1. Take it to the Lord in prayer.
  1. Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
  1. Take it to the Lord in prayer!
  1. In His arms, He’ll take and shield thee,
  1. Thou wilt find a solace there.
  1. Blessed Savior, Thou hast promised
  1. Thou wilt all our burdens bear;
  1. May we ever, Lord, be bringing
  1. All to Thee in earnest prayer.
  1. Soon in glory bright, unclouded,
  1. There will be no need for prayer—
  1. Rapture, praise, and endless worship
  1. Will be our sweet portion there.

Peter, the Rock - August 27, 2017

The Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time  A

Reading I  Isaiah 22: 19-23

Psalm 138

Reading II  Romans 11:33-36

Gospel  Matthew 16: 13-20

As I reflect on this picture of Peter, I am struck by an unusual response from him as he receives the keys, a different attitude.

Usually Peter is very spontaneous; however, this picture shows Peter almost stunned as He holds the keys. Is there any wonder that he might be surprised that he is given this responsibility after the weakness he exhibited during the Passion of Jesus?

Yet, Jesus still shows confidence in Peter. What causes Jesus to choose such a weak man? Jesus sees the deep love in the heart of Peter and the possibility of spiritual growth, once he has been humbled by his failure. Also, for Peter to be able to lead weak human beings, he needs to understand the human condition.

With beautiful sensitivity, Jesus gave Peter the opportunity to affirm his love three times, possibly to make up for the three times he denied that he knew Jesus. Jesus works with Peter to a point that Peter becomes strong enough to endure martyrdom for his faith. He became the Rock on which the Church could stand.

Jesus can work with us also, if we are open to Him. He can help us conquer our weaknesses and pride. All we need to do is to trust Him and surrender to Him. One of my favorite hymns is...

“I Surrender All”

Text by Judson W. Van de Venter  1855-1939
Tune by Winfield S. Weeden  1847-1908

 All to Jesus I surrender,                All to Jesus I surrender,
 All to Him I freely give                  Make me Savior, wholly Thine;
 I will ever love and trust Him        Let me feel the Holy Spirit
 In His presence daily live.            Truly know that Thou art Mine.

Refrain:                                          All to Jesus I surrender,

I surrender all, I surrender all,        Lord, I give myself to Thee
All to Thee, my blessed Savior,      Fill me with Thy love and power,
I surrender all.                                Let Thy blessings fall on me.

Today, as I gazed on the tall sunflowers in our garden, the wind began to blow them in all directions. However, they are embraced by many wires and connected to a trellis. Therefore, they survived the winds and remained whole. Just so, by putting ourselves in the embrace of Jesus, we are held sturdy no matter what kind of winds assail us. Let us praise and thank the Lord for His support and patience with Peter and with us.

 Reflection:   How can you remember the Presence of the Lord in times of crisis or danger?

 I will ever love and trust Him         totalmente Tuyo;
Yo siempre amaré y confiaré         Déjame sentir el Espíritu Santo
en Él.                                              En verdad sabes que Tú eres Mío.

Estribillo:
Todo a Jesús me rindo,
Me rindo de todo,                           Señor, me doy a Ti
me rindo de todo,                           Lléname con Tu amor y poder,

Todo a Ti, mi bendito Salvador,     Que Tus bendiciones caigan
Me rindo de todo.                           sobre mí.

                          ***************************

Be Not Afraid - June 25, 2017

The Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year A

Jeremiah 20: 10-13

Psalm:
 69

Reading II:
Romans 5: 12-15

Gospel: Matthew 10: 26-33

At a time when terrorist attacks are occurring around the world and people are dying for their faith,  Jesus’ words of reassurance are most appreciated. When there are threats of nuclear bombs, and we do not know what tomorrow will bring, how comforting the words of Jesus in this Sunday’s Gospel from Matthew: “Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge.”

This reminds me of a hymn I heard for the first time when I was a campus minister at Xavier University of New Orleans. It has become one of my favorites.

“His Eye Is On The Sparrow”
Words by Civilla D. Martin, 1905
Music by Charles H. Gabriel, 1905

Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heaven and home,
When Jesus is my portion? My constant friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Chorus:
I sing because I'm happy,
I sing because I'm free,
For His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.
“Let not your heart be troubled,” His tender word I hear,
And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;
Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Chorus

Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise,
When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies,
I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Chorus

When we are concerned whether we would be strong enough
to accept torture or give up our lives for our faith, we need to
ask the Lord’s help to remain faithful. He can give us courage
beyond our ability. We need to trust that He is with us. He
knows our weaknesses. He can give us the strength that
we
need.

In the meantime, Jesus wants us to lead our lives according
to his teachings. He wants us to offset the hatred in our world
by acts of love. The benefit concert by Ariana Grande for the
victims of the Manchester attacks is a great example. Love
can triumph over hate. That is the meaning of “Thy Kingdom come.” which we frequently pray in the “Our Father.”

Spanish Translation of Reflection Above...

No tengas miedo

Su ojo está en el gorrión, y yo sé que Él me observa;
Su ojo está en el gorrión, y yo sé que Él me vigila.

Coro:
Yo canto porque soy feliz,
Yo canto porque soy libre,
Porque su ojo está sobre el gorrión,
Y sé que Él me vigila.
“No se turbe vuestro corazón”, Su palabra tierna oigo,
Y descansando en Su bondad, pierdo mis dudas y temores;
Aunque por el sendero que Él guía, pero un paso puedo ver;
Su ojo está en el gorrión, y yo sé que Él me observa;
Su ojo está en el gorrión, y yo sé que Él me vigila.

Coro

Siempre que me siento tentado, siempre que surgen nubes,
Cuando las canciones dan lugar a los suspiros, cuando la esperanza dentro de mí muere, Me acerco más a Él, desde el cuidado Él me libera; Su ojo está en el gorrión, y yo sé que Él me observa;
Su ojo está en el gorrión, y yo sé que Él me vigila.

Coro
