Hospitality - July 2, 2017

The Thirteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time  A

Reading I:  2 Kings 4:8-11,14-16a

Psalm: 89

Reading II: Romans 6:3-4, 8-11

Gospel:  Matthew 10:37-42

This Sunday’s readings are all about hospitality. The Hebrew Scripture describes the generous hospitality shown to the prophet 

Elisha by the woman from Shunem and her husband who provided not only food but also a room for Elisha during his travels.

Then Matthew in his Gospel quotes Jesus saying: “Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones...will surely not lose his reward.” 

There are many definitions of hospitality and many ways it can be expressed. It is basically friendliness and caring. It can range from providing food and shelter to listening to someone who is troubled.

It can range from helping provide clean water in places where people die from disease-infected water to offering a cup of tea to a friend.

Whatever form it takes, it involves setting aside one’s own interests

and focusing on the needs of another. That can be a challenge as we now live in such a fast-paced world. Surrounded by so many

needs, including our own legitimate needs, we can sometimes become overwhelmed. That is when we need to carve out some special time to be with the Lord. 

We need to ask the Lord’s guidance regarding what He wants of us.

He may simply affirm the many ways we are already showing hospitality or He may call us to extend ourselves more. He may even ask us to put the persons in His hands if we are overextended.

We just need to open our hearts to listen deeply in silence to our Shepherd and follow His lead.

Hospitalidad

Las lecturas de este domingo tratan de la hospitalidad. La Escritura Hebrea describe la generosa hospitalidad mostrada al profeta

Eliseo por la mujer de Shunem y su esposo que no sólo le proporcionó comida sino también un espacio para Eliseo durante sus viajes.

Entonces Mateo en su Evangelio cita a Jesús diciendo: “El que te recibe me recibe a mí, y el que me recibe recibe al que me envió. Y el que da sólo una taza de agua fría a uno de estos pequeños ... seguramente no perderá su recompensa.”

Hay muchas definiciones de la hospitalidad y muchas maneras que se pueden expresar. Es básicamente simpatía y cariño. Puede variar desde proveer comida y refugio hasta escuchar a alguien que está preocupado. Puede ir desde ayudar a proporcionar agua limpia en lugares donde la gente muere de agua infectada por la enfermedad hasta ofrecer una taza de té a un amigo.

Sea cual sea la forma que adopte, implica apartar los propios intereses y centrándose en las necesidades de otro. Eso puede ser un desafío ya que ahora vivimos en un mundo tan acelerado. Rodeado de tantos Necesidades, incluyendo nuestras propias necesidades legítimas, a veces podemos ser abrumados. Es entonces cuando necesitamos tener un tiempo especial para estar con el Señor.

Necesitamos pedir la guía del Señor con respecto a lo que El quiere de nosotros. Puede simplemente afirmar las muchas maneras en que ya estamos mostrando hospitalidad o Él puede llamarnos para extendernos más. Incluso puede pedirnos que pongamos las personas en Sus manos si estamos excesivamente extendidos.

Sólo necesitamos abrir nuestros corazones para escuchar profundamente en silencio a nuestro Pastor y seguir Su ejemplo.

Be Not Afraid - June 25, 2017

The Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year A


Reading I:
Jeremiah 20: 10-13

Romans 5: 12-15

Gospel: Matthew 10: 26-33

At a time when terrorist attacks are occurring around the world and people are dying for their faith,  Jesus’ words of reassurance are most appreciated. When there are threats of nuclear bombs, and we do not know what tomorrow will bring, how comforting the words of Jesus in this Sunday’s Gospel from Matthew: “Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge.” 

This reminds me of a hymn I heard for the first time when I was a campus minister at Xavier University of New Orleans. It has become one of my favorites.

When we are concerned whether we would be strong enough 
to accept torture or give up our lives for our faith, we need to
ask the Lord’s help to remain faithful. He can give us courage
beyond our ability. We need to trust that He is with us. He
knows our weaknesses. He can give us the strength that
we need.  

In the meantime, Jesus wants us to lead our lives according
to his teachings. He wants us to offset the hatred in our world
by acts of love. The benefit concert by Ariana Grande for the
victims of the Manchester attacks is a great example. Love
can triumph over hate. That is the meaning of “Thy Kingdom come.” which we frequently pray in the “Our Father.”

No tengas miedo

En un momento en que los ataques terroristas están ocurriendo en todo el mundo y la gente está muriendo por su fe, las palabras de Jesús de tranquilidad son muy apreciadas. Cuando hay amenazas de bombas nucleares y no sabemos lo que traerá el mañana, ¿cómo reconfortar las palabras de Jesús en el evangelio de este domingo de Mateo: “¿No se venden dos gorriones por una moneda pequeña? Sin embargo, ninguno de ellos cae al suelo sin el conocimiento de tu Padre.”

Esto me recuerda un himno que escuché por primera vez cuando era un ministro de la universidad de Xavier de New Orleans. Se ha convertido en uno de mis favoritos.

Cuando nos preocupa si seríamos lo suficientemente fuertes
Para aceptar la tortura o renunciar a nuestras vidas por nuestra fe, necesitamos pide ayuda del Señor para que permanezca fiel. Puede darnos coraje más allá de nuestra capacidad. Necesitamos confiar en que Él está con nosotros. Él conoce nuestras debilidades. Él puede darnos la fuerza que nosotros necesitar.

Mientras tanto, Jesús quiere que llevemos nuestras vidas
A sus enseñanzas. Quiere que compensemos el odio en nuestro mundo por actos de amor. El concierto benéfico de Ariana Grande para el Víctimas de los ataques de Manchester es un gran ejemplo. Amor Puede triunfar sobre el odio. Ese es el significado de “Tu Reino Vienen”,  que con frecuencia oramos en el “Padre Nuestro”.

Jesus, the Lamb of God - June 18, 2017

The Lamb of God

When we reflect on the Sacred Body and Blood of our Savior, we realize that under that humble appearance of bread and wine, we have the Almighty God Himself hidden. There are many titles given to help us get a glimpse of the wonders within. Our minds cannot contain them all at once. We need to focus on one at a time.

One of my favorite titles is used just before we receive Holy Communion. The priest holds up the Host and says: “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” “Lamb of God” is such a tender title.  It bespeaks gentleness, sacrifice, and 
new life. 

How sweet the image of the gentle little lamb. How gentle the Lamb
of God is dealing with us sinners. How strong and self-sacrificing He was to undergo the Passion with all the cruelty shown by those very creatures whom He had chosen to redeem! What humility to allow Himself to be consumed by His creatures in the Eucharist so that they may be one with Him and one another! 

There is no other explanation except that He loves us so dearly that we could say that He is “crazy about us.” All He asks is that we return that love and love one another as He has loved us. We are so weak that we even have to ask His grace to love Him as He deserves to be loved and to love our neighbor as ourselves.

There is so much meaning packed into the title “Lamb of God”
that it is no wonder that the priest at Mass calls on us to pause and contemplate the Host saying: “Behold the Lamb of God, Behold
Him who takes away the sins of the world.” What could be more
fitting just before we are fed with His Sacred Body and Blood? What an awesome God we have!  How truly “Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lord!”  How wonderfully blessed are we!!!

Corpus Christi - El Cordero de Dios

Cuando reflexionamos sobre el Sagrado Cuerpo y la Sangre de nuestro Salvador, nos damos cuenta de que bajo esa apariencia humilde de pan y vino, tenemos el Dios Todopoderoso Oculto. Hay muchos títulos dados para ayudarnos a tener una visión de las maravillas dentro. Nuestras mentes no pueden contenerlas todas a la vez. Tenemos que centrarnos en uno a la vez.

Uno de mis títulos favoritos es usado justo antes de recibir la Santa Comunión. El sacerdote levanta la Hostia y dice: “He aquí el Cordero de Dios que quita los pecados del mundo”. “Cordero de Dios” es un título tan tierno. Significa dulzura, sacrificio y nueva vida.

¡Qué dulce es la imagen del corderito! ¡Qué cordial es el Cordero!

De Dios está tratando con nosotros pecadores. ¡Cuán fuerte y sacrificado iba a sufrir la Pasión con toda la crueldad mostrada por aquellas mismas criaturas a las que Él había escogido redimir! ¡Qué humildad para permitir que Él sea consumido por Sus criaturas en la Eucaristía para que puedan ser uno con Él y unos con otros!

No hay otra explicación excepto que Él nos ama tanto que podríamos decir que Él está “loco por nosotros”. Todo lo que Él pide es que devolvamos ese amor y nos amemos unos a otros como Él nos ha amado. Somos tan débiles que incluso tenemos que pedirle a Su gracia que lo amemos como Él merece ser amado y amar a nuestro prójimo como a nosotros mismos.

Hay mucho significado en el título de “Cordero de Dios”

Que no es de extrañar que el sacerdote en la Misa nos haga una pausa y contemple a la Hostia diciendo: “He aquí el Cordero de Dios, He aquí Aquel que quita los pecados del mundo”. ¿Qué podría ser más Justo antes de que nos alimenten con Su Sagrado Cuerpo y Sangre? ¡Qué Dios tan maravilloso tenemos! Cuán verdaderamente “¡Bienaventurados los llamados a la cena del Señor!” ¡Cuán maravillosamente bendecidos somos!

The Holy Trinity - June 11, 2017

The Feast of the Holy Trinity - Year A

EX 34: 4B-6, 8-9

Since the whole concept of
The Holy Trinity is really not within our total grasp, we need to just look at the hints of the possibility of the Trinity to help us at least with some little comprehension of the reality.

Just as we cannot look directly into the sun without some protection, we cannot fully understand the Trinity in this life. However, there are things all around us to give us an inkling of what it must be like. We have the shamrock three in one which St. Patrick used to help people to understand. We have one person with three identities: wife, mother, grandmother. Then perhaps, one of the closest reflections is the man and woman in love who produce a child.  

The reason that I am calling the conception of a child one of the closest resemblances to the Trinity is that mutual sharing of love is the reality of the Holy Trinity. That is also what we hope to experience in heaven. 

Although, while here, we cannot fully grasp the concept, we believe it because Jesus referred to it many times, and we trust in Him. He said that He and the Father are one. He commissions his disciples to go “...to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And I will be with you always, to the end of the age.” (John 28:19-20)

The symbol of the Trinity above reminded me of a beautiful paper weight that I once treasured. It was cut like a large diamond. As
I would move it about, the light reflected a variety of gorgeous colors.
It always reminded me of the infinite glorious aspects of our one true God. We are so blessed to have such a magnificent loving God. What joy we can anticipate as the veil is lifted from our eyes in heaven and we can see our God clearly in all His glory.

Santísima Trinidad

Dado que todo el concepto de La Santísima Trinidad no está realmente dentro de nuestro alcance total, solo necesitamos mirar los indicios de la posibilidad de que la Trinidad nos ayude al menos con algo de comprensión de la realidad.

Así como no podemos mirar directamente al sol sin alguna protección, no podemos entender completamente la Trinidad en esta vida. Sin embargo, hay cosas alrededor de nosotros para darnos una idea de lo que debe ser. Tenemos el trébol tres en uno que St. Patrick solía ayudar a la gente a entender. Tenemos una persona con tres identidades: esposa, madre, abuela. Entonces, tal vez, una de las reflexiones más cercanas es el hombre y la mujer en el amor que producen un niño.

La razón por la que estoy llamando a la concepción de un niño
una de las semejanzas más cercanas a la Trinidad es que la mutua participación del amor es la realidad de la Santísima Trinidad. Eso es también lo que esperamos experimentar en el cielo.

Aunque, mientras que aquí, no podemos entender completamente el concepto, lo creemos porque Jesús se refirió a él muchas veces, y confiamos en Él. Él dijo que Él y el Padre son uno. Él ordena a sus discípulos a ir “... a todos los pueblos de todas partes y hacerlos mis discípulos: bautizadlos en el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo y enséñales a obedecer todo lo que Yo os he mandado. Y yo estaré con vosotros todos los días, hasta el fin del mundo.” (Juan 28: 19-20)

El símbolo de la Trinidad arriba me recordó un hermoso Peso de papel que una vez atesorado. Se cortó como un diamante grande. Como yo lo movería alrededor, la luz reflejaba una variedad de colores magníficos. Siempre me recordaba los infinitos aspectos gloriosos de nuestro único Dios verdadero. Somos tan bendecidos por tener un Dios tan magnífico y amoroso. Qué alegría podemos anticipar cuando el velo es levantado de nuestros ojos en el cielo y podemos ver a nuestro Dios claramente en toda Su gloria.
