When we look at the serene statues and pictures of the Holy Family, we tend to forget that while they enjoyed many positive human experiences, they also had to deal with many difficult situations. Let us reflect on some of the situations that required trust in their lives.
The challenges to the Holy Family begin as early as the conception of Jesus in the womb of a virgin. Both Mary and Joseph had to face questioning and misunderstandings. Then, near the time of Jesus’ birth, a census is decreed and Joseph and the pregnant Mary are required to travel to Bethlehem at a most inconvenient time. The town is crowded and the available places to stay are filled, so the only option they have is to stay in a cave which houses animals. I can imagine that this was a cause of frustration and anxiety as Joseph attempts to provide a safe and appropriate place to take Mary for the birthing of the Savior.
Then, there is the problem of providing safety for Jesus as word comes that Herod has ordered the killing of baby boys under the age of two. Again, Joseph has to uproot Mary and Jesus and travel to Egypt to hide from those who are killing baby boys. How much fear and anxiety both he and Mary must have felt as they try to protect the precious Infant from harm.
Once the Holy Family is able to return to Nazareth, even in the ordinary living of life, they must have encountered frustrations and difficulties. Once Jesus becomes twelve, it is time for him to be brought to the Temple. When the caravan gathers to return to Nazareth, Jesus, unknown to Joseph and Mary, stays behind in deep discussions with the elders. Can you imagine the anxiety of his parents when they realize he is not with either one of them? Once they find him, I am sure they are much relieved.
However, like parents of children moving into a new phase of growth, Mary and Joseph have to try to understand Jesus’ actions and response to them. Why hadn’t Jesus told them that he was going to stay behind? What did he mean when Jesus said, “Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business?” Scripture says that they did not understand. Nevertheless, they remained faithful. As humans with limited understanding, that is our challenge too.
Reflection Question: How can we develop stronger trust in the Lord in the challenging times of our lives?

La Sagrada Familia
Cuando miramos las estatuas serenas y las imágenes de la Sagrada Familia, tendemos a olvidar que, si bien disfrutaron de muchas experiencias humanas positivas, también tuvieron que enfrentar muchas situaciones difíciles. Reflexionemos sobre algunas de las situaciones que requieren confianza en
sus vidas.
Los desafíos para la Sagrada Familia comienzan tan pronto como la concepción de Jesús en el vientre de una virgen. Tanto María como José tuvieron que enfrentar cuestionamientos y malentendidos. Luego, cerca del momento del nacimiento de Jesús, se decreta un censo y se requiere que José y la María embarazada viajen a Belén en el momento más inconveniente. La ciudad está llena de gente y los lugares disponibles para hospedarse están llenos, por lo que la única opción que tienen es quedarse en una cueva donde se alojan animales. Me puedo imaginar que esto fue motivo de frustración y ansiedad cuando José intenta proporcionar un lugar seguro y apropiado para llevar a María al nacimiento
del Salvador.
Luego, está el problema de brindar seguridad a Jesús a medida que llega la noticia de que Herodes ha ordenado el asesinato de bebés varones menores de dos años. Una vez más, José tiene que desarraigar a María y a Jesús y viajar a Egipto para esconderse de los que están matando bebés. Cuánto miedo y ansiedad debieron sentir tanto él como Mary cuando intentan proteger al precioso Infante de cualquier daño.
Una vez que la Sagrada Familia puede regresar a Nazaret, incluso en la vida ordinaria de la vida, deben haber encontrado frustraciones y dificultades. Una vez que Jesús cumple doce años, es hora de que él sea llevado al Templo. Cuando la caravana se reúne para regresar a Nazaret, Jesús, desconocido para José y María, se queda atrás en profundas discusiones con los ancianos. ¿Te imaginas la ansiedad de sus padres cuando se dan cuenta de que no está con ninguno de los dos? Una vez que lo encuentren, estoy seguro de que están
muy aliviados.
Sin embargo, al igual que los padres de niños que pasan a una nueva fase de crecimiento, María y José deben tratar de entender las acciones y la respuesta de Jesús. ¿Por qué Jesús no les había dicho que se iba a quedar atrás? ¿Qué quiso decir cuando Jesús dijo: “¿No sabías que yo debía ocuparme de los asuntos de mi Padre?” Las Escrituras dicen que no entendieron. Sin embargo, se mantuvieron fieles. Como humanos con entendimiento limitado, ese es nuestro desafío también.
Pregunta de reflexión: ¿Cómo podemos desarrollar una confianza más fuerte en el Señor en los tiempos difíciles de nuestras vidas?
