The Baptism of the Lord  - Year C

In today’s Gospel, we see Jesus at the beginning of his public ministry.  As an example for us, he, the sinless One, joins the others in the waters of the Jordan River and goes through the ritual of cleansing ( the word “Baptism” means to immerse or wash in water). What better way to begin his work of our redemption than by connecting himself with us in spite of his innocence.

Jesus’ baptism also is a means of revelation. John, the Baptist, points away from himself to Jesus when people are drawn to him. “I am baptizing with water, but He, (Jesus) will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire.” The voice of the Father is heard saying: “You are my beloved Son; with you, I am very pleased.” Then, the Holy Spirit appears in the form of a dove, a symbol of love, and descends upon Jesus. This love will now be expressed in Jesus’ dedication to spreading the “Good News” as He begins teaching, preaching, healing, helping, and forgiving publicly. This love will also be the bond binding together the followers of Jesus in the Christian Community.

As the Church community has evolved over the centuries, there have been some variations in the physical aspects of baptism, e.g. immersion, or sprinkling with water. However, the essence of the meaning of the ritual has remained the same, the dying to a sinful life and rising to a new life of holiness in Christ.

The Church recognizes that besides the baptism with water, there are other ways that one can dedicate his or her life to Christ, e.g. through the years and even today there are martyrs who give up their lives rather than deny Jesus. We call that the Baptism of Blood.

There is also Baptism of Desire. If people want to do the will of their Creator, but has never known about Jesus, by implication, they would have the baptism of desire. Another situation could be that someone is studying about Jesus with the intention of being baptized, but dies suddenly without the waters of baptism, he or she also could have the baptism of desire.

Anyone who has taught or accompanied an adult or older child through the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) or RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation of Children) will attest to its value. The process of in-depth study of the Faith and the free choice of being baptized has often resulted in truly dedicated Catholic Christians.

The Catholic Church recognizes the baptisms of most Protestant mainline denominations. Therefore to join the Catholic Church, most baptized in a  Protestant church simply need to make a profession of faith in the Catholic Church.

I know some people who were baptized as infants and fell away from the Church. They joined the RCIA classes and renewed their baptisms. As a result, they became very dedicated to their faith.

What a wonderful gift the Lord has given us: our birth into our human families and our birth into the Christian family. Most of us take some time to celebrate our human birthdays. What about our birth into the Christian family? I, for one, have never celebrated my baptismal day. Better late than never. It is time to begin the practice!

El Bautismo de Jesus

En el Evangelio de hoy, vemos a Jesús al comienzo de su ministerio público. Como ejemplo para nosotros, él, el que no tiene pecado, se une a los demás en las aguas del río Jordán y pasa por el ritual de la limpieza (la palabra “Bautismo” significa sumergirse o lavarse con agua). Qué mejor manera de comenzar su trabajo de nuestra redención que conectándose con nosotros a pesar de
su inocencia.

El bautismo de Jesús también es un medio de revelación. Juan, el Bautista, apunta de sí mismo a Jesús cuando las personas se sienten atraídas hacia él. “Estoy bautizando con agua, pero Él (Jesús) bautizará con Espíritu Santo y fuego”. Se oye a la voz del Padre que dice: “Tú eres mi Hijo amado; contigo, estoy muy complacido ”. Entonces, el Espíritu Santo aparece en forma de paloma, un símbolo de amor, y desciende sobre Jesús. Este amor ahora se expresará en la dedicación de Jesús a difundir las “Buenas Nuevas” cuando comience a enseñar, predicar, sanar, ayudar y perdonar públicamente. Este
amor también será el vínculo que unirá a los seguidores de Jesús en la
comunidad cristiana.

A medida que la comunidad de la Iglesia ha evolucionado a lo largo de los siglos, ha habido algunas variaciones en los aspectos físicos del bautismo, por ejemplo. inmersión, o aspersión con agua. Sin embargo, la esencia del significado del ritual ha permanecido igual, morir a una vida pecaminosa y elevarse a una nueva vida de santidad en Cristo.

La Iglesia reconoce que además del bautismo con agua, hay otras maneras en que uno puede dedicar su vida a Cristo, por ejemplo. A través de los años y hasta hoy, hay mártires que renuncian a sus vidas en lugar de negar a Jesús. A eso le llamamos el Bautismo de Sangre.

También hay Bautismo de Deseo. Si las personas quieren hacer la voluntad de su Creador, pero nunca han sabido acerca de Jesús, por implicación, tendrían el bautismo de deseo. Otra situación podría ser que alguien esté estudiando acerca de Jesús con la intención de ser bautizado, pero muere repentinamente sin las aguas del bautismo, él o ella también podrían tener el bautismo de deseo.

Cualquier persona que haya enseñado o acompañado a un adulto o niño mayor a través del RCIA (Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos) o RCIC (Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de Niños) dará fe de su valor. El proceso de estudio en profundidad de la Fe y la libre elección de ser bautizados a menudo ha resultado en cristianos católicos verdaderamente dedicados.

La Iglesia Católica reconoce los bautismos de la mayoría de las denominaciones principales protestantes. Por lo tanto, para unirse a la Iglesia Católica, la mayoría de los bautizados en una iglesia Protestante simplemente necesitan hacer una profesión de fe en la Iglesia Católica.

Conozco a algunas personas que se bautizaron cuando eran bebés y se alejaron de la Iglesia. Se unieron a las clases de RICA y renovaron sus bautismos. Como resultado, se volvieron muy dedicados a su fe.

Qué maravilloso regalo nos ha dado el Señor: nuestro nacimiento en nuestras familias humanas y nuestro nacimiento en la familia Cristiana.  La mayoría de nosotros nos tomamos un tiempo para celebrar nuestros cumpleaños humanos. ¿Qué hay de nuestro nacimiento en la familia cristiana? Yo, por mi parte, nunca he celebrado mi día de bautismo. Mejor tarde que nunca. ¡Es hora de comenzar la práctica!
